At the intersection of smart and cool

Catch “She a Gem” at the Kennedy Center Through February 24th

A “gem” refers to a local leader who takes responsibility for and care of his or her neighborhood. The three friends who star in the original play She a Gem, now playing at the Kennedy Center, wonder if they’re bound for this distinct type of greatness. The girls, growing up in inner city Philadelphia, have an opportunity to find out when their neighborhood hosts a double dutch competition at the block party.

The winners receive a session with a local psychic capable of forecasting their future. The girls are already hard at work perfecting their double dutch moves when they meet a girl from a neighboring community. Like them, she’s a teenager—but she’s also pregnant. That doesn’t stop her from jump-roping, though, and they invite her to join their team. The following weeks of practice lead to deep conversations with their new friend, who slowly unravels her story—and it’s one that surprises them. Grab tickets to She a Gem for $20 each while it’s at the Kennedy Center through February 24th.
